European Countries’ response to heatwaves: the case of “MOOC Machine Learning in Weather and Climate”

Utilizing data on European weather events to produce analyses capable of generating models for climate planning—this is the goal that inspired the course ‘MOOC Machine Learning in Weather and Climate,’ promoted by ECMWF and produced using the European Extreme Events Climate Index.

The exercise has enabled the identification of countries with similar characteristics concerning their responses to extreme heatwaves. This activity, termed ‘clustering,’ has facilitated an analysis of how the values for exposure to thermal stress and countries’ subsequent reactions have changed over time.

An innovative approach to the topic of climate change in Europe, the course has contributed to a deeper understanding of climate models and national responses to climate challenges, providing significant insights for future planning and mitigation.
