The reaction of European countries to heat waves: the case of “MOOC machine learning in weather and climate”

To use data on meteorological events in Europe to produce analyses able to generate climate planning models: this was the aim that resulted in the “MOOC machine learning in weather and climate” course promoted by the ECMWF and produced using the European Extreme Event Climate Index.

The exercise made it possible to identify the countries with similar characteristics in terms of the responses implemented in relation to extreme heat waves, an activity called “clustering”, making it possible to analyse how the thermal stress exposure values and the reactions of the various countries have changed over time.

An innovative approach to climate change in Europe, which has helped obtain a more detailed understanding of climatic models and the national responses to climatic challenges, thereby providing important insight for planning and future mitigation.
