The last few months have been particularly dynamic and climate-relevant. The E3CI has been collecting, analysing and quantifying monthly data on extreme weather events in Europe for the first quarter of 2025.
Today we want to take stock: understanding extreme weather events and their impacts is indeed crucial, not only for raising scientific and public awareness, but also for planning and implementing mitigation strategies in a concrete and informed way.
Thanks to the constantly updated E3CI DataStation, we were able to observe and highlight the main climate anomalies that occurred.
January – March: Climate trends in the first quarter of 2025
Europe
Europe Several European countries recorded extremely high maximum temperatures. In particular, the Faroe Islands showed significant anomalies throughout the period, with a peak of 15.6°C in March.
In addition, Poland reported above-average values throughout the first quarter.
Italy
Several Italian regions recorded anomalies for the drought phenomenon in January and March, with 12 and 5 regions affected respectively.
In the same months above-average values were also observed for hail events, with 6 regions affected in January and 4 in March.
Emilia-Romagna
Looking in more detail at the provinces of Emilia-Romagna, 4 provinces recorded above-average values for extreme temperatures and extreme precipitation in January and February.
