How is Italy faring? Download the extreme events annual report

Prepared by the IFAB Foundation, with the support of the CMCC Foundation and Leithà – Unipol Group, the paper “Come sta l’italia?” is now available for consultation The publication is part of the E3CI (European Extreme Events Climate Index) project, which was launched to investigate and monitor the impacts of climate change at both national and European levels through the collection and analysis of data on extreme weather events.

This year once again, the E3CI team has overseen the publication of the report, providing an in-depth analysis of the extreme events that affected Italy between September 2024 and August 2025. Il documento si propone come uno strumento di supporto per l’analisi degli impatti meteorologici sulle diverse aree geografiche, sulle comunità e sui principali settori produttivi del Paese.

How Is Italy Doing? Analysis of Unusual Meteorological Events – 2024–2025

The annual report dedicated to the E3CI Index aims to build a historical dataset to support the monitoring and analysis of climate data, with a specific focus on Italy—a country that has become increasingly exposed in recent years to the effects and consequences of extreme weather events. In addition to providing an up-to-date overview of Italy’s climate situation, the report documents how the E3CI Index works and how it can be applied in practice.

The publication is structured into several sections:

  • an in-depth overview of the origins and functioning of the E3CI Index, intended to clarify its structure and potential uses within an increasingly dynamic and complex climate context;

  • a detailed climate analysis of the most recent hydrological year, aimed at identifying and discussing the emergence of significant trends across the Italian territory. For each indicator, the report includes monthly insights and analyses of regional differences;
    Per ciascun indicatore analizzato sono presenti focus mensili e approfondimenti sulle differenze regionali;

  • a concluding section focused on interpreting the results and highlighting any significant differences compared with previous years;

  • a chapter dedicated to the potential applications of the E3CI Index, conceived as an operational tool to support public institutions and private stakeholders in managing the impacts associated with extreme events;

  • a case study that examines in detail the possible relationship between the occurrence of extreme weather events and trends in food price inflation in Italy, with particular attention to fruit and vegetable products.

The paper is available and can be downloaded free of charge from the website under the section Paper: “Come sta l’Italia?”
