Adaptation to Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities for SMEs between Resilience and Innovation

On November 19th, we presented the E3CI Index during the third session of the training course “ConSimest – Knowledge that Inspires Your Business, Skills to Build the Future,” organized by SIMEST, titled “Adaptation to Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities for SMEs between Resilience and Innovation.” This interactive workshop was designed to support Italian companies, particularly SMEs, in their processes of internationalization and sustainable and digital transition.

Held in collaboration with SCS Consulting and hosted at the IFAB Foundation venues, the event offered a valuable opportunity for dialogue and exchange with local SMEs, encouraging reflection on the risks, challenges, and opportunities arising from the ongoing climate change. It served as a platform to discuss best practices for mitigating its effects and developing future adaptation strategies. In particular, the intervention of sector experts and the exchange with participants allowed for in-depth discussions on:

  • The concrete implications of climate change for businesses;
  • The most effective mitigation and adaptation strategies;
  • Actions that companies can take to strengthen resilience and competitiveness;
  • Tools that can support this process, such as the E3CI Index, which helps businesses monitor and quantify extreme events in a structured and informed way.
E3CI Index Explained to SMEs

In the context of climate change and the ongoing debate on the best practices SMEs can adopt to adapt to the dynamic challenges posed by climate change, the E3CI Index provided a concrete and applicable tool for businesses both locally and beyond.

Thanks to its monthly-updated datastation, which helps quantify and monitor the frequency and intensity of extreme events, the E3CI Index represents a crucial resource for studying the past, understanding the present, and implementing informed strategies for the future of businesses. Two real-world case studies were presented, showcasing how the Index’s data have been used to measure the impacts of extreme events in various sectors, such as manufacturing and food price inflation.
